Check out his review of his alma mater: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options.How urban or safe is the campus?Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Michael: UNCWs campus is safe and convenient. Since the campus does not have roads running through it, many students easily get around campus with skateboards and bikes. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Michael: UNCW is known for having professors dedicated to teaching, rather than research. Thus, the professors at UNCW were always helpful and available. This made class and advising very informative and meaningful. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Michael: The living conditions get bigger and better each year at UNCW. After living in standard dorms as a freshman, all other on-campus housing offers individual rooms and large living spaces. As for socialization opportunities, the vast amount of clubs, teams, and societies are second to none. There is a club for anything youre interested in, and every student is involved in something. The dining options on-campus are great and all different. My favorite dining hall was Dubs, and my favorite place to stop in was the on-campus Dunkin Donuts. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported?What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Michael: The best-represented majors at UNCW are Business, Marine Biology, Nursing, and Education. But, from my experience, every major was well supported because of the high caliber professors. I studied Mathematics and Education, which both had excellent support and professors. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Michael: Meeting people as a freshman was easy because of the students participation on campus. At the beginning of each semester, there is a campus involvement fair in which you sign up for clubs, teams, and societies. Greek life does not play a large role in campus social life, but it does exist. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Michael: The Career Center and student services were helpful with my job search and resume. During the year, there are many career fairs, which big companies use to recruit on campus. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Michael: UNCWs library is great for studying, except during finals period. It becomes over-crowded then. Besides the library, there are plenty of lounge-type areas to get some light studying done around campus. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between?To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Michael: The city of Wilmington is a highlight of UNCW. Four miles east of campus is Wrightsville Beach, and four miles west of campus is Downtown Wilmington (located on the Cape Fear River). So, within eight miles, you have endless possibilities that students use frequently. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Michael: The student body is around 14,000 students, making for a medium-sized school feel. As a Mathematics major, I was in classes of 20-30 and the professors knew my name. Some other majors like Business have lectures in large lecture halls. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Michael: As a junior, I took Modern College Geometry in a small classroom with 22 students. With a great professor and motivated classmates, our classroom became a learning environment with a real team feel. I have never seen such collaboration, participation, and desire to learn in a college class before. During the lectures, the forum was open to discussion and ideas were constantly brewing. After class, there was always a group of up to 10 students who worked on the assignments together. 11 Signs Youre Going to Rock Your Vocal Audition (in GIFs!) Suzy S. Even if youve picked out the perfect song to sing for your audition, its normal to feel nervous! But take a deep breath if youve got the below 11 things down pat, youre on the right track   Auditions are a fact of life for a serious singer. After all, they are the job interview for the performer! If youre wondering how to prepare for a singing audition, Im here to help you with some important  singing audition tips. Although auditions  can seem daunting, there are plenty of things you can do to feel confident. Here are 11 signs that you’re going to rock your vocal audition! 1. You are rested. True, it may be harder in this day and age to get the suggested eight hours of sleep every night, but the more quality sleep you have the night before, the better! A relaxed body means better sound, as there will be a lot less tension. 2. Your materials are together. This means your sheet music is in the right key and clearly marked for the accompanist. The pages are also back-to-back and neatly organized in a binder. If youre using sound files, they should be  easily accessible and cued up at the correct time. 3. You know your lyrics backwards and forwards! Confidence is key, and knowing that you REALLY have your songs down pat will help you soar through the audition! 4. You’ve done a good warm-up. This means at least 15  to 20  minutes or so of light vocal exercises. It’s best not to do too much more than that, as you risk tiring yourself out. Think basic lip trills, hums, and sirens you can never go wrong with those! It doesnt  needs to be anything fancy. 5. You are dressed appropriately. This means you look professional, but you are also not restricted in any way by  clothing or shoes that are too tight, which can affect your breathing and overall comfort level. Remember a comfortable body means free tone! 6. You’ve picked songs that are right for your voice type. The tessitura of each song fits you like a glove. These songs are so worked into your voice that someone could wake you up at 3am to have you sing themâ€" and you’d still sound good! That’s when you know you have the perfect audition songs for your voice. 7. The “coast is clear” meaning your throat and sinuses! You’re free of congestion and excess phlegm. This means your vocal cords will come together nicely to make beautiful sounds. Problems with congestion? Please don’t panic. Just do more lip trills and sirens! 8. You’re hydrated. This is one of the most important singing audition tips to keep in mind. There’s nothing worse than the feeling of a dry throat when you have to sing! Just make sure you didn’t over-hydrate, because that can dry out your vocal folds, too. One of my favorite things to suggest to singers is to cut an apple into quarters: this has the perfect ratio of water as well as citric acid to break up any light congestion. Its the perfect pre-audition snack! 9. You know what you’re singing about. Now this  is a biggie! Singing the right notes, rhythms, and words is essential, but what good is all of that if you aren’t connecting dramatically? Those that choose to be compelling over perfect  are almost always those that get hired! 10. You realize that the audition starts before you begin singing. This means being kind and respectful to any audition monitors, stage managers, and definitely to your accompanist, should you be working with one! You never know who has the final say in whether or not you get hired or cast. Smile, be friendly, and be prompt! Being a diva will get you nowhere. And lastly…. 11. You are prepared to have FUN. Yes, I said it. Auditions can indeed be fun. You are going to rock any vocal audition you do if you treat it like an intimate performance, rather than something you have  to do. With these singing audition tips, youll have an easier time dealing with the butterflies that try to creep up. Here, one of our most experienced GMAT tutors, John Easter, analyzes a question about prime numbers using problem solving skills. Problem #44 of the2018 Official Guide to the GMATstates that if n is a prime number greater than 3, what is the remainder when n^2 is divided by 12? (A) 0 (B) 1 (C) 2 (D) 3 (E) 5 I call these kinds of problemsTheorem Problems. What I mean by that is that there is some deep mathematical rule that forms the basis of the problem. In this case that rule is about squares modulo p and quadratic residues.Neither of these is part of what the GMAT is testing - even if you're treating the quantitative section as a math test and not a game. Clearly someone working for GMAC is nerding out. Unfortunately for the nerd in question, and fortunately for us, mathematicians don't do multiple choice. When you see something like this, take a deep breath and remember that PS (problems solving) questions are matching games. We just have to match the question to the answer. We don't need math degrees. So, pick a prime greater than 3, square it, and divide by 12. What's the remainder? For example, 5 is a prime greater than 3 (in fact, the smallest prime greater than three - keep it simple), 5^2 is 25, and when 25 is divided by 12, the remainder is 1. The correct answer is B. It's really that simple. Now, an important question: Do we need to check another example? The answer is NO! There's only one answer per question! If you studied a language in school, why are you still unable to carry out a basic conversation?You dont want to spend another seven years re-learning a language the wrong way again, so here are five ways to learn a language fast! How to Learn a Language Fast1. Put Yourself in a Situation Where Growth Is InevitableIf you give yourself an option of using your language skills, chances are you will choose to not use them. Our brain will instinctively choose the decision that is simple and requires less thought. Like acquiring any new skill, learning a new language is going to require strong will. You must consciously lock yourself outside your comfort zone and not allow yourself to step back inside it for a while. Its not an easy decision, and may requir e some creative thought, but the results are well worth the effort.Many people say the best way to learn a new language is by living in the countryâ€"this is not true! More often than not, when you are in that country, the natives will want to practice their English skills when they see you. We live in a world where English is a desirable and lucrative skill to have, so most foreign countries will have an English-speaking population, especially around the larger cities. In this situation, growth is not inevitable; it is still optional.But is it truly possible to keep ourselves in a situation where we have no choice but to use our language skills? Yes!When I  moved to China, I was assigned to work at a school in a less industrialized part of the Shenzhen. Although it was a city of over 12 million people, it was rare to find any Chinese people fluent in English. Most of the time, I was the only foreigner within a given 5-mile radius. This was insanely frustrating at first, but it forc ed me to start learning the language. If I wanted to order food at a restaurant or find my way around the city, I had to start communicating with the locals. Within a few weeks, I acquired dozens of new, useful phrases that may have taken me months to learn otherwise.Not living abroad? No problem! There are still plenty of ways to make learning unavoidable. Some of these might include switching your cell phone or social media to the language you are studying,  committing yourself to a language group or  finding a conversation partner. It means using the language smoothly in real time.Accuracy, on the other hand, is the ability to be correct and precise. It means communicating without any grammatical, vocabulary, tonal and other errors.Yes, these two are distinct entities. You can be fluent in a language without having 100% accuracy. Alternatively, you can have language accuracy while still not being anywhere near fluent. The ultimate goal when learning a new language is to use it fluently, not accurately.This does mean we should forget the importance of accuracy. Yes, you may have slip-ups when using your new language, and thats okay. Think about times when you didnt accurately follow the rules of your native language, but you were still perfectly understood by others. It happens more than we realize.When beginning to learn a new language, resist the urge to start learning as many words as possible. Resist the urge to say each sentence perfectly. Language cannot be learned from a textbook alone. Instead, focus on learning practical, colloquial topics and work your way up from there. Youll save yourself a lot of time and stress.3. Replace Cramming with Spaced Repetition SoftwareIn Mandarin, theres the saying: ???????? which means, Study hard every day and you will improve. But is it really that simple?When you do study on your own, it can  be tempting to try cramming loads of new vocabulary into our brains and then waiting a while before we study again. While this may be effective in the short term, it is ultimately not the way to develop a long-lasting memory.Treat learning a new language different th an you would studying for an exam. There are more effective ways to memorize information that improve the likeliness of long-term learning, such as spaced repetition software (SRS). SRS are computer programs modeled after a process similar to using flashcards.  These flashcards are generated by sophisticated  algorithms that space out the time intervals indicated when each card will appear again on the screen.In other words, easier cards appear less frequently that harder cards, allowing users to spend more time studying the cards that are more difficult. The tough ones continue showing up until they are mastered, giving you the chance to actively learn them more efficiently than other learning styles.By replacing cramming with spaced repetition softwares, youll be saving yourself lots of studying time, and thus learn faster.Once you start using SRS, finding quality learning examples and sentences are going to become a chore.After all, its not enough to just memorize a lot of words.
